Equipping a mall with PA isn't improvisation — it's acoustic engineering requiring precise calculations. The difference between an annoying mall and a pleasant one is engineering from day one. A practical guide before signing any contract.
Zoning fundamentals
A 50K m² mall needs 12-18 zones minimum. Each zone has independent volume, different music, and targeted announcements. Zones must be designed by visitor profile, not just architectural divisions.
- Main entrance: welcome music, 65-70 dB
- Main corridors: commercial music, 68-72 dB
- Restaurant areas: calm music, 60-65 dB
- Food Court: upbeat, 70-75 dB
- Cinema & entertainment: low level, 60 dB
- Kids' shops area: cheerful, 70 dB
- Rest areas & prayer rooms: silent (announcements only)
- Service areas (parking, service entrances): announcements only, 75 dB
ℹ️ For enclosed malls, use 100V ceiling speakers 6-15W each, spaced every 6-8 meters.
Calculating required speaker count
Field rule: one ceiling speaker per 35-50m² in corridors at 3-3.5m height. For 50K m² (assume 70% active acoustic area = 35K m²), you need 700-1000 ceiling speakers across 12-18 zones.
⚠️ Many contractors propose 30-40% fewer speakers to reduce cost. Result: 'cold spots' — dead zones where targeted announcements vanish.
Choosing required SPL
Required SPL = background noise + 12 dB (so announcements are clearly heard). In an active mall, background is 60-65 dB, so required SPL is 72-77 dB at ear level. This determines per-speaker power (W) and spacing.
Control system: the smart hub
Modern malls need a central DSP managing all zones. Essentials: 32+ inputs, 32+ outputs, web control, Dante/AES67 networking, and time-based scheduling.
💡 Look at Bose ControlSpace, QSC Q-SYS, or Symetrix — the top 3 used in major malls globally.
Integration with other systems
Modern PA isn't isolated — it must integrate with: fire alarm (auto emergency announcements), BMS (auto schedule), mall security (security announcements), and licensed commercial music platform (Mood Media / Soundtrack).
Expected budget
- Budget (Chinese speakers + basic DSP): 800,000-1,200,000 SAR
- Mid (Bose/JBL Commercial + mid DSP): 1,800,000-2,500,000 SAR
- Pro (TOA/EAW + advanced DSP): 3,500,000-5,000,000 SAR
- Premium (d&b audiotechnik + full Q-SYS): 7,000,000-12,000,000 SAR
💎 Smart owner tip: don't choose cheapest. Bad mall sound = bad mental image = lost customers. Invest mid-tier minimum.
When to request a survey
Before any quote, request a free survey covering: background noise per zone, RT60 measurement, 3D zone mapping, and proposed SPL per zone. A provider not offering this — walk away.
